Applegate Pioneer Cemetery

APPLEGATE RIVER and its tributaries rise in the Siskiyou Mountains. It flows into Rogue River west of Grants Pass. The valley through which it flows is known as the Applegate district, and there is a post office called Applegate in Jackson County. Applegate is an honored name in Oregon history; Jesse, Lindsay and Charles Applegate came to Oregon from Missouri in 1843, and for many years were prominent in pioneer affairs. Lindsay and Jesse Applegate went into Southern Oregon on an exploring expedition in 1846, particulars of which are found in Lindsay Applegate's account in OHQ, V. 22, p. 12 et. seq. and also in Carey's History of Oregon, p. 444. In 1848, Lindsay Applegate was a member of a party of Willamette Valley settlers who visited the Rogue River Valley in Southern Oregon on the way to the mines in California. This party prospected on the stream now known as Applegate River, which was named in compliment to Lindsay Applegate. See OHQ, V. 22, p. 3. Oregon Geographic Names, Sixth Edition, p. 24

Located at Drain, this pioneer cemetery containing the remains of members of the Applegate family, was named for Charles Drain, pioneer settlers in the locality. The donation land claim on which the town of Drain is situated was taken up by Warren Goodell. He sold it to Jesse Applegate who in turn sold the property to Charles Drain in 1861.In 1872 the Oregon & California Railroad reached Northern Douglas Copunty. Drain and his son, John, had sold 60 acres of their land to the railroad for one dollar "in consideration of establishing a station...and laying out a town to be called "Drain."
